Trump, Syria and Gas Thread – UPDATES

April 9, 2017

Well, the inevitable has happened, Trump has launched some 59 cruise missiles to a nearly empty airbase in Syria. This at a time when his administration had hit an all-time low ratings approval. As expected, the corporate/state controlled U.S. media is fawning all over Mein Trumpf. CIANN, MSDNC and Faux News bow to the warrior king saying that he “Became Presidential”, and NBC staff say how “beautiful” the filmed launch was.

At issue is who is responsible for the gassing of civilians; Assad or Al Qaeda affiliates? Chemicals from Syrian jets or a rebel chemical factory that was bombed? Obviously, Assad would have no motive at this point in the Syrian “civil war” (U.S. proxy war) to use chemical weapons, which were scheduled to be destroyed by agreement with Russia.

This thread will be updated as more news comes in, little commentary will be provided so please refer to the articles at the links.

Where Was CIA’s Pompeo on Syria?
April 8, 2017

By Robert Parry

“There is a dark mystery behind the White House-released photo showing President Trump and more than a dozen advisers meeting at his estate in Mar-a-Lago after his decision to strike Syria with Tomahawk missiles: Where are CIA Director Mike Pompeo and other top intelligence officials?

The photograph released by the White House of President Trump meeting with his advisers at his estate in Mar-a-Lago on April 6, 2017, regarding his decision to launch missile strikes against Syria.

Before the photo was released on Friday, a source told me that Pompeo had personally briefed Trump on April 6 about the CIA’s belief that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was likely not responsible for the lethal poison-gas incident in northern Syria two days earlier — and thus Pompeo was excluded from the larger meeting as Trump reached a contrary decision.”

Wag The Dog — How Al Qaeda Played Donald Trump And The American Media
By weapons inspector Scott Ritter

“The Russian Ministry of Defense has claimed that Liwa al-Aqsa was using facilities in and around Khan Sheikhoun to manufacture crude chemical shells and landmines intended for ISIS forces fighting in Iraq. According to the Russians the Khan Sheikhoun chemical weapons facility was mirrored on similar sites uncovered by Russian and Syrian forces following the reoccupation of rebel-controlled areas of Aleppo.”

Syria: Beyond Western Myths and Half-Truths
by Ron Jacobs

http://www.counterpunch.org/2017/04/11/syria-beyond-western-myths-and-half-truths/

(Excerpt)

“In the chapter titled “Regime Change,” Gowans notes Palestinian scholar Edward Said’s 2003 comment that the US would not stop its intervention in the Middle East until the entire Arab World was ruled by pro-American regimes. He then details a little known anecdote about US attempts under President Eisenhower to assassinate communist and Ba’athist politicians in the Syrian government. The person assigned to carry out this plan was none other than Kermit Roosevelt, one of the masterminds behind the US-orchestrated overthrow of Iranian president Mossadegh and his replacement with the US client Shah Pahlavi in 1953. Roosevelt’s plan was eerily similar to the events which unfolded in 2011 in Syria. Internal uprisings fomented by CIA money and Muslim Brotherhood organizers were to work in tandem with armed paramilitary groups to start an uprising in Syria—an action which would bring the force of the Syrian military into the streets. In the mayhem, it is assumed that the CIA’s assassination targets would be taken care of. Although the plan fell through, there is a reason US citizens are not aware of this history. If they did know, it is perhaps less likely that they would support their government in its interventions in Syria and elsewhere around the world.”

  • Review: “Continental Reckoning” By Elliot West
I learned quite a bit in reading this huge book, which probably was meant for college classes. Indeed, the author of “Continental Reckoning”, Elliot West, is a Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Arkansas. This book should be in an Economic or Law history class, and probably is. Author Elliot West clearly outlines […]
  • All About Ken Kesey: Two Reviews
“Spit In The Ocean #7 – All about Kesey” is an eclectic collection of real tales about legendary Oregon writer Ken Kesey. Kesey is best known for writing “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” (mental institutions) and “Sometimes A Great Notion” (an Oregon logging family). Both books were actually written in California, and both are […]
  • Review: “Acid Dreams” By Lee & Shlain
I found “Acid Dreams; The Complete History Of LSD: The CIA, The Sixties, And Beyond” a pretty good summary of the LSD experience, from the use of the drug in interrogation techniques used by intelligence agencies, to the use of such drugs to destabilize the revolutionary youth movement. At nearly 300 pages (my copy), it […]
  • Did Jack Scott “Radicalize” The NBA’s Bill Walton?
Did Jack Scott Radicalize NBA Star Bill Walton? Sadly, we have to note that Bill Walton (and Jack Scott) are no longer living. Walton was a hero for many where I grew up in Portland, Oregon. He was the star of an NBA championship, which I pretty much didn’t care about. Later, Walton was doing […]
  • Review: Gold Warriors – America’s Secret Recovery Of Yamashita’s Gold
This book, “Gold Warriors”, by Sterling and Peggy Seagrave is really, really good. It can be expensive because it is out of print, but I bought it long ago and it has been waiting in my “to read” pile. Affordable copies can still be found, I ordered one for a friend and apparently it is […]
