Dr. Richard Fuisz

Checking out “Intel Today”, one of my favorite websites for tips to follow, I found an update on a man I spoke with in the ’90’s – Dr, Richard Fuisz. I’ll follow up with that update from Intel Today, but first a short piece I wrote in 2009 about my encounter with Fuisz in 1994:

“In 1994 I was writing for “The Portland Free Press”, a small alternative newspaper Edited by researcher Ace Hayes. At the time, I was running a series on military C-130 aircraft destined for duty as Forest Service air tankers that were diverted to use by a group of shady CIA contractors. A source had described to me how money connected to the operation was being run through a bank called “Congress Financial”, which was a CIA front company.
I recieved an unsolicited phone call from the secretary of a man named Dr. Richard Fuisz, and I returned the call. Fuisz confirmed the information about Congress Financial, and told me he had called to see if I would run a story about his knowledge of the sale of huge Terex trucks that had been converted to missile launchers and sold to Iraq shortly before the first Gulf War. He had personally toured the assembly plant in Motherwell, Scotland and officials described that it was a joint operation by the CIA and British Intelligence. Fuisz ran afoul of U.S. authorities when he tried to take the story to “60 Minutes”. He had been hounded by private security firms, and had even had a personal meeting with President Bill Clinton to remedy the situation. His hope was to try to get the story in print, and I ran the article.
At the time, I realized that Dr. Fuisz was well-connected, but I had no idea that he was an agent for the CIA himself.
The Lockerbie Connection
At the same time Fuisz was feeding me information on the Terex Iraqi missile launchers, he was in contact with another Portland resident, Susan Lindauer. Lindauer was a press aide for then-Congressman (now Senator) Ron Wyden, and it’s my guess that Lindauer may have given Fuisz my article referencing Congress Financial.
It was Lindauer’s connection to Fuisz that got her in hot water when she was arrested for being an agent of the Iraqi government, which she denied. She had met with Iraqi diplomats before Bush invaded Iraq, but claimed it was on official business. Lindauer was also the cousin of former White House Chief-of-Staff Andrew Card. A deposition by Lindauer described how she was working with Fuisz, and that Fuisz knew from his Intelligence work in the Middle East that the Lockerbie bombing was actually the work of Syrians.”

Fuisz was an interesting contact. He sent me some declassified documents that showed how the Iraqis were using Asian slave laborers, housing them in shipping containers and working them to death on a huge river dam project. I wrote his story about the Terex missile launchers for The Portland Free Press. At the time however, he had not told me about his knowledge of the Lockerbie bombing. If he had, I would have been all over that…

And here are a few snippets from “Intel Today” on the Richard Fuisz story, at this link:

(Excerpts)

“Lawyer: “You were being told by members of the Syrian government that [Ahmed] Jibril, and or members of the PFLP-GC were taking credit for the [Lockerbie] bombing?”

Dr Richard Fuisz: “Yes.”

US court deposition by Dr Richard Fuisz (Early 2001)

“The truth [about Lockerbie] no doubt will never be told.”

“Richard Carl Fuisz, M.D. (born December 12, 1939) is an American physician, inventor, and entrepreneur, with connections to the United States military and intelligence community.

He holds more than two hundred patents worldwide, in such diverse fields as drug delivery, interactive media, and cryptography, and has lectured on these topics internationally.

Fuisz is a member of the Board of Regents at Georgetown University, where he and his brother created an annual scholarship honoring their deceased elder sibling, and established the first endowed professorship at the Georgetown University School of Medicine. [WIKIPEDIA]”

“In Sept. 1987, Dr Fuisz was given a tour of the main Terex plant in Motherwell, Scotland. The Terex Corporation is a subsidiary of KCS of Westport, Connecticut.

“I had noticed two large armor-plated vehicles painted in desert camouflage with specially attached steel backs. I asked the plant manager, Art Rowe, about them and was told they were missile launchers for the Iraqi military,” Fuisz said in an affidavit taken for a US Congressional subcommittee investigating the matter.

“These shipments were all requested by the C.I.A. with the cooperation of the British intelligence people,” David J. Langevin, the vice president of Terex, told Fuisz according to his deposition.”

“Fuisz was deposed in December 2000 in presence of three CIA attorneys as well as two others from the US DoJ. As not one single question, no matter how much trivial, was answered, the judge decided to adjourn.

In a matter of days, the head of the CIA personally wrote to the judge to seek his help in ending the legal process. Nevertheless, in a second meeting, Fuisz admitted that he had high level contacts in Damascus.

Moreover, vital information was placed under double seal. Neither the content of George Tenet’s letter nor the information under double seal was ever revealed, but it had become abundantly clear that Fuisz was a high level CIA HUMINT asset.”

Fuisz had clearly run afoul of the intelligence community, he told me he was being tracked by private detectives from the spook-connected “Kroll” organization (Wikipedia)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kroll_Inc.

He really wanted some publicity on the Terex case, at the time it sounded like he was under a lot of pressure for simply reporting to the U.S. Government what he had seen at the Terex plant and how it might affect U.S. plans for the first Gulf War.

But I really had no idea how close he had been to the CIA.

  • Review: “Continental Reckoning” By Elliot West
I learned quite a bit in reading this huge book, which probably was meant for college classes. Indeed, the author of “Continental Reckoning”, Elliot West, is a Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Arkansas. This book should be in an Economic or Law history class, and probably is. Author Elliot West clearly outlines […]

“Spit In The Ocean #7 – All about Kesey” is an eclectic collection of real tales about legendary Oregon writer Ken Kesey. • Review: “Acid Dreams” By Lee & Shlain
I found “Acid Dreams; The Complete History Of LSD: The CIA, The Sixties, And Beyond” a pretty good summary of the LSD experience, from the use of the drug in interrogation techniques used by intelligence agencies, to the use of such drugs to destabilize the revolutionary youth movement. At nearly 300 pages (my copy), it […]

Did Jack Scott Radicalize NBA Star Bill Walton? Sadly, we have to note that Bill Walton (and Jack Scott) are no longer living. Walton was a hero for many where I grew up in Portland, Oregon. He was the star of an NBA championship, which I pretty much didn’t care about. Later, Walton was doing […]
