Army Massacres Students At Kent State May 4th 1970

May 5, 2017

Here we are, in another unfamiliar Presidential malaise Under Mein Trumpf. I have reason to post this as a memory for the students that protested and those that lost their lives, but with an eye on the near future.

First, here’s a summary of the shootings of students by the National Guard, it’s complicated but this sets the scene:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_State_shootings

“The Kent State shootings (also known as the May 4 massacre or the Kent State massacre)[3][4][5] were the shootings of unarmed college students protesting the Vietnam War at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, by burning the campus ROTC building and throwing rocks at the Guardsmen. The shootings were perpetrated by members of the Ohio National Guard on May 4, 1970. Twenty-nine guardsmen fired approximately 67 rounds over a period of 13 seconds, killing four students and wounding nine others, one of whom suffered permanent paralysis.[6][7]

Some of the students who were shot had been protesting the Cambodian Campaign, which President Richard Nixon announced during a television address on April 30. Other students who were shot had been walking nearby or observing the protest from a distance.[8][9]

There was a significant national response to the shootings: hundreds of universities, colleges, and high schools closed throughout the United States due to a student strike of 4 million students,[10] and the event further affected public opinion, at an already socially contentious time, over the role of the United States in the Vietnam War.[11]”

As I have written in a previous article, I have talked with the father of an agent who quit the Secret Service before the election because he saw the bullshit coming.
Word then was his contacts were worried that the far-right militia’s would become Trump’s “Brown-shirts”, much like Mussolini and Hitler used for street-fighters against “the left”.

That concern still stands, although it may take some domestic terror incident to bring it about.
The recent talk has been that it is going to happen this summer.
A long, hot summer with lots of protests that may escalate, and the following authoritarian response.

This is not my speculation, but that of a recently retired Secret Service agent.

One Response to Army Massacres Students At Kent State May 4th 1970

    Meanwhile,

Back in Boulder, Colorado, on the University of Colorado campus, in the student cafeteria, a couple of students I hung around with pointed out several students, or student pretenders, that were informants for our friendly intelligence/law agency(s) (you pick one or more) that eavesdropped on, took pictures of students and even encouraged unlawful acts when they sat in on a student group planning peaceful protests of Kent State, Vietnam and so on.
The informants, I think they got a few bucks for their secret police type conduct, $50 a month I heard, at times pretended that they were with the student activists and it was they that actually tried to talk the others into committing violence and so on.
I know, I was there and I saw and I heard.
Yeah, spying on their fellow Americans that were…exercising freedom of speech and assembly. I see that it is even worse now
What the hell is up with that?.

  • Review: “Continental Reckoning” By Elliot West
I learned quite a bit in reading this huge book, which probably was meant for college classes. Indeed, the author of “Continental Reckoning”, Elliot West, is a Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Arkansas. This book should be in an Economic or Law history class, and probably is. Author Elliot West clearly outlines […]
  • All About Ken Kesey: Two Reviews
“Spit In The Ocean #7 – All about Kesey” is an eclectic collection of real tales about legendary Oregon writer Ken Kesey. Kesey is best known for writing “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” (mental institutions) and “Sometimes A Great Notion” (an Oregon logging family). Both books were actually written in California, and both are […]
  • Review: “Acid Dreams” By Lee & Shlain
I found “Acid Dreams; The Complete History Of LSD: The CIA, The Sixties, And Beyond” a pretty good summary of the LSD experience, from the use of the drug in interrogation techniques used by intelligence agencies, to the use of such drugs to destabilize the revolutionary youth movement. At nearly 300 pages (my copy), it […]

Did Jack Scott Radicalize NBA Star Bill Walton? Sadly, we have to note that Bill Walton (and Jack Scott) are no longer living. Walton was a hero for many where I grew up in Portland, Oregon. He was the star of an NBA championship, which I pretty much didn’t care about. Later, Walton was doing […]
